Two years ago, most live chat AI bots were frustrating for users and embarrassing for the companies that deployed them. In 2026, that's changed dramatically. Modern AI chatbots built on large language models can now handle a surprisingly high proportion of customer queries accurately, naturally, and without human intervention.
But they're not all equal. We tested the AI chatbots built into six major live chat platforms and ranked them on what actually matters to businesses.
What makes a good live chat AI bot?
Before the rankings, here's what we evaluated:
- Accuracy: Does it answer questions correctly, or hallucinate?
- Natural language: Does it understand varied phrasing, typos, and follow-up questions?
- Training effort: How much work is needed to get it performing well?
- Escalation: Does it hand off to a human gracefully when needed?
- Pricing: Is the cost reasonable relative to the value?
The AI Chatbot Rankings
1. Intercom Fin AI — Most powerful, but pricey
Fin AI is built on GPT-4 and trained on your help centre content. In testing, it accurately answered 78% of questions without human intervention, and its handoff to human agents was seamless. The catch: Fin AI costs $0.99 per resolution on top of Intercom's already-premium seat pricing.
2. Tidio Lyro AI — Best value for SMBs
Lyro AI is Tidio's conversational AI, trained on your website's FAQ content. Setup takes about 30 minutes of content ingestion, and performance is excellent for straightforward queries. In our testing, it resolved 62% of routine questions accurately. At $39/month for 50 AI conversations, it's accessible for small businesses.

3. Freshchat Freddy AI — Best for Freshworks users
Freddy AI is Freshworks' AI engine, available across Freshchat and Freshdesk. It's well-integrated if you're already in the Freshworks ecosystem, with good intent detection and solid escalation flows. Slightly less capable on nuanced queries than Lyro or Fin, but improving rapidly.
4. LiveChat ChatBot integration — Good but separate product
LiveChat's AI bot is actually a separate product (ChatBot.com) that integrates with LiveChat. This means an additional subscription, but the bot builder is visual and powerful. Setup is more involved, but the result is a highly customisable automation layer.
5. Crisp AI — Solid for the price
Crisp's AI features are included in their Unlimited plan ($95/workspace/month) and work reasonably well for FAQ answering. Not as sophisticated as Lyro or Fin, but built-in rather than an add-on — which simplifies billing.
6. tawk.to AI — Basic, but free
tawk.to includes basic automation (triggered responses, FAQ bot), but it's not a true AI chatbot in the same way as the others above. For very simple use cases, it works. Don't expect natural language understanding.
So, are AI chatbots worth it?
The answer depends on your chat volume:
| Monthly chat volume | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Under 50 chats/mo | Skip AI — handle manually or use tawk.to free bot |
| 50–500 chats/mo | Tidio Lyro AI ($39/mo) — best ROI at this scale |
| 500–2,000 chats/mo | Tidio Lyro AI (higher tier) or Freshchat Freddy |
| 2,000+ chats/mo | Intercom Fin AI — the cost per resolution becomes competitive |
